Looking down at the Col de la Buffaz from the Pointe de la Québlette. This is one of only several approaches to the plateau that were viable at the time of World War II. There were no roads, only a few footpaths and cart tracks upon which one had to climb around 700m from the valley below.

It is also worth noting that the siege and ensuing battle took place during the winter when the entire plateau and approaches were buried under a metre or more of snow.
